Buses Need Friends Too

Bus passengers are invited to work with transport policy makers and bus operators on an exciting new initiative in which they get to 'befriend' their bus. The idea came from the Transport Pool, an open group of volunteers that was featured on this show in June last year, and will bring together bus users with those who live, work or play on the routes. By building a stronger sense of community amongst bus users and a stronger sense of accountability both on the side of the operators and the passengers, it is intended that the 'Friends of Routes' initiative will help to tackle not only reliability issues but also anti-social behaviour. Overall it will make the experience of using buses in Manchester a more positive one.

Bill Harrop, Transport Pool Facilitator, is excited about the new initiative: 'Potentially it's a fantastic opportunity to get people involved in their local bus services. The operators, the council and GMPTE have shown great interest in the idea, which is bound to have a positive impact on bus performance and the experience of using public transport. You never know, it might even get people talking to each other.'

So look out for an opportunity to befriend your bus. More news as we hear it. See the Transport Pool Website for more detail.

Low Fares and a Structure that Everyone can Understand

This is the wish of Gerry Doherty of the Transport Salaried Staff Association, the Union for transport workers, who reacted to the recent increases in fare rises with a plea to ministers to 'curb soaring fares before passengers are priced off the trains altogether.' Coming hot on the heals of Richard Branson announcing flights to Malaysia for 40 quid, and the Manchester Evening News announcing that the journey from Manchester to London is now the dearest in Europe, recent rail fare increases have left many thinking that enough is enough. Don't forget though that it is often possible to get good deals in advance by looking on the Internet at websites such as www.thetrainline.co.uk

National Shake up of Buses Begins

Proposals put forward by Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander in the report 'Putting Passengers First' could mean the end of Manchester's bus wars and herald a new era of punctuality and cooperation. Described by Greater Manchester's very own Roger Jones as 'the biggest shake-up to the way bus services have been run in Manchester for 20 years,' changes could mean that GMPTE gets more power to regulate the buses and set standards for price, punctuality and routes. Since buses were privatised and deregulated 20 years ago, fares in Manchester have climbed 48% above inflation and bus passenger journeys have fallen by 38%. Watch this space for news as the review progresses. You can download the full report from the Department for Transport.
